A Live Q&A with Indie Filmmaker S Kannan by UAKC

We really enjoyed doing the live Q&As while promoting the Indian Panorama screenings for “Josef – Born in Grace”. We enjoyed it so much that we wanted to continue doing it. And in the spirit of our mission to promote cinema as an artform, we wanted to bring focus to independent filmmakers from around the country.

For our next Live, we’ll be talking to S Kannan. His debut feature film, “Password” was shown at the 2021 Chennai International Film Festival. It tackles financial imbalances and loss of ethics that arise from the onset of rapid globalisation, while remaining a tense thriller.

Before venturing into cinema, Kannan has been an accomplished portrait artist. He works primarily in pencils, but more recently has been experimenting with oils. He is also a writer whose work has been published in several collections. He has managed all this while maintaining a career as a software developer.

As he’s grown as an artist, he realised that cinema would be the best medium for him to bring his artistic ambitions to life. A self taught filmmaker, he made the critically acclaimed short films ‘Theeraathu’, ‘Penpaal’, and ‘Pazhaiya Mugam’ before tackling his feature film, “Password”.

We would really like to thank the team at ICAF and the Chennai International Film Festival for being absolutely wonderful about introducing us to filmmakers that we would like to interview. They are incredible supporters of independent cinema, and we wouldn’t even have considered taking on this project without their help.

We’re really looking forward to our Q&A with him on Facebook at 7pm IST on Sunday, August 1, 2021. Join us there and bring any questions for him that you have about independent filmmaking, balancing artistic ambitions with a regular career, and short films.
