As we’ve been speaking with filmmakers and attending panels at film markets, we’ve noticed that many who make art films have to balance their passion for cinema with other careers. Some teach, others make commercials, and yet others work in entirely different industries and balance their filmmaking around that.
In our continuing collaboration with ICAF, we are speaking with another Tamil filmmaker, Sridhar Venkatesan, for our next Live with UAKC conversation. An IT professional by training, films have always been his interest and passion. He found a group of like-minded individuals at his workplace, and together, they collaborated to make short films.
We learned about Sridhar’s journey during our pre-interview with him. That got me (Ishan) thinking about my own journey from a corporate career towards working on building UAKC and making arthouse films. Where does the balance fall between making art for yourself, making art that connects with people enough that they pay for it, and making art that is purely commercial so that you can afford to keep a roof over your head? We’ll definitely be exploring this aspect of the filmmaking life during the Q&A.
His most recent film, Yen Peyar Anandhan (My Name is Anandhan) was selected as part of the Indian Panorama at the 18th Chennai International Film Festival.
Join us live at 7 PM on August 15th to hear about it.
