Ghaath is a very unique Marathi film, right from the subject to the screenplay to storytelling. The story itself is the hero of the film! It’s a proud moment for us all that the film was selected to premiere at the 73rd annual Berlin International Film Festival in 2023, one of the three major film festivals in the world.  

This film is an unsparing psychological thriller that portrays the civil war that has been raging in central India for over 50 years between the Indian central government and the Naxalites, Maoist guerrillas who control whole swathes of land, began over fifty years ago and has since taken on a life of its own in remote jungle regions. Everyday life for those who are fighting and also for the local population is marked by violence and the constant proximity to death.

It reveals the current situation in one of the theatres of war from the perspectives of three different protagonists: a drunken policeman, an informant, and a demoralised guerrilla. For the villagers who are caught between these invisible fronts, every trip to the neighbouring village, a careless sentence, and even the search for a lost dog can become life-threatening.

Relying on his images to depict this beleaguered region in central India, Chhatrapal Ninawe, the director and writer of the film, transports the audience into an almost hypnotic atmosphere that heightens both the senses and awareness. 

The film has been produced by Shiladitya Bora (Platoon One), Manish Mundra (Drishyam Films), Milapsinh Jadeja, and Sanyukta Gupta and co-produced by Ashok Mahapatra, the founder of UA Kathachitra.
